SLOWPITCH SOFTBALL
Slow Pitch Softball is a NEW program offered by Greater Altoona Girls Softball Association. Girls in grades 9-12 are eligible to participate in this program. This program is open to girls in Altoona, the entire Southeast Polk School District, Pleasant Hill, Runnells, Mitchellville, Des Moines, and surrounding communities. Players do not need to be in the Southeast Polk School District to participate.
GAGSA has received feedback from the community asking for a recreational softball program for high schoolers. The slow pitch softball league is intended to be a laid back, fun, and casual league. Team requests WILL be honored for this league when possible, and players are encouraged to recruit other players to register and fill their own teams. Practice time will be offered but is not required. A parent coach will be assigned to each team, however it is encouraged for players to manage the team. The parent coaches will act as umpires, assist players with rules and game play, and help manage player rotations. Players will be required to bring their own glove, and batting helmet (with or without face guard). It is recommended for infield players to wear a defensive face mask. It is strongly recommended for players to wear a defensive face mask while pitching. Slow pitch softball bats and balls will be provided for games. If a player provides their own bat, it is advisable to use a USA or USSSA stamped slow pitch bat. A player may use a USSSA stamped fastpitch bat if they choose. Large barrel, Baseball, wooden, or unstamped bats will not be permitted.
Specific details of the slow pitch softball program are still being finalized. The GAGSA league directors will be seeking feedback from interested players / coaches over the fall & winter and hope to offer this program to our members in spring 2024.
