Recreational League Softball

League Softball is a recreational youth softball program offered by Greater Altoona Girls Softball Association.  This program is open to girls ages 5-15 in Altoona, the entire Southeast Polk School District, Pleasant Hill, Runnells, Mitchellville, Des Moines, and surrounding communities. Players do not need to be in the SEP School District to participate.  The goal of league softball is to provide a fun, positive environment where girls can learn and expand their softball skills. League softball promotes a sense of belonging for everyone with a focus on teamwork and individual success which can contribute to team sports.  League softball is a good option for players new to softball and experienced players looking to build upon their existing skills.

GAGSA offers a spring and fall league program.  The spring league season runs from April to June.  Spring teams are formed by coach draft in March. Practices are allowed to start the last week of March with games typically starting the last week of April. The spring regular season includes 9 games over 8 weeks.  All teams will participate in an end of season league tournament which is held the week immediately following the regular season.  6U teams will play one end of season game.  8U-14U teams will compete in a bracket style, single elimination tournament.  The fall season runs from August-September.  Fall teams are formed by the GAGSA league directors. Not all players from spring league will choose to also participate in fall league. Players will also sometimes play up a division in the fall as a way to prepare for next years spring league or in advance of the tournament softball season. There are also several players who will age out of the program after the spring league season. Due to the factors above, players should not expect to be placed on the same team they played with in the spring.  The fall season includes 6 regular season games. There is no end of season tournament for fall league.

GAGSA does not honor player or coach request for the spring or fall season. Sibling team requests will

be accepted. All GAGSA coaches are volunteers.  If you have an interest in coaching please reach out to the GAGSA league director.

League softball is a great choice for players new to softball. It is expected that players will work on their fundamental softball skills at home and outside of practices and games. This includes playing catch at home reading the rule book and learning the rules of the game. GAGSA does provide a list of coaches for individual paid lessons on our website for any player looking for further advance their skills.

All league games are played at Sam Wise Softball Complex in Altoona, Iowa.  Games are played Monday-Wednesday. Games start at 6:00pm.
